Across the country, water systems and facilities are working to implement new methods to help track the spread of COVID-19. Being able to detect potential outbreaks early is critical for the safe reopening of communities, and research points to an unexpected method that could be key to catching COVID-10 early: wastewater.
According to recent research, testing wastewater for the presence of COVID-19 RNA can provide a seven day leading indicator of outbreaks, compared to other compiled testing data. Scientists believe that humans begin shedding the virus RNA up to five days prior to average symptom onset, meaning this detection method can catch outbreaks early — instead of individuals waiting to develop symptoms before being tested, potentially infecting others during that time period.
This method has already been implemented by some organizations across the country, in communities such as Houston and the University of Arizona.
At 120Water, we’re here to help states and municipalities run these programs using our end-to-end solution. The core components of new wastewater monitoring programs include areas where we have consistently excelled: our scalable lab relationships, automated logistic capabilities, and expertise in managing complex water programs. These competencies make us a natural fit for wastewater monitoring during a time when it is critical to take action. Our cost effective solution, money-saving automation, faster turnaround time, and proven science come together to arm our clients with the knowledge they need to instantly visualize trends and make informed decisions.
The 120Water platform aggregates all wastewater plant data, triggers the shipping of sample kits, routes completed samples to a lab, consolidates lab results, and displays results on an easy to read dashboard – all hallmarks of our drinking water programs that we’re excited to bring to the wastewater side. Using this data, clients are able to share findings with their health department or a board certified epidemiologist. Wastewater operators can choose to have our dedicated team manage the program, or they can manage it themselves and use the software to track and report on samples. 120Water will train wastewater plant operators to ensure consistent and reliable data collection.
Perhaps the most important advantage of working with 120Water on a program like this lies in our extensive lab network. By tapping into our vast network of labs, including Microbac, we’re able to be the only company to offer an end-to-end solution that includes software, services, sampling kits, and lab load balancing that ensures wastewater testing results are returned within six days from sample receipt.
“This program is a natural step in applying our vast knowledge of how to manage the complex logistics and data required to make water sampling programs work at scale. As such, we are ideally positioned to provide the largest network of wastewater monitoring programs for COVID-19 in the United States,” said CEO Megan Glover.
We’re proud to already be working with colleges and universities across the state of Indiana, such as IU Bloomington – and we’re excited to expand this offering to other states and cities.
